Movies, in a way, have always been a big part of our lives. Many of us relate to the characters in them and the different scenarios depicted in them. And more so because they try to represent our very own lives. To get to the audience and relate to the plot is one of the biggest aims of movie culture.
Coming of age movies run audiences through the teen or tween years of the characters, where they learn to grapple with reality and the world around them as they grow up.
Here are some of the best coming of age movies ever:
Perks of Being a Wallflower
Without a shadow of a doubt, this movie claims first place in this list. Based on the bestselling book by Stephen Chbosky, this movie tells the story of a wallflower, aka Charlie who likes to stay in the shadows by avoiding the spotlight yet empathizes with a host of characters around him. It deals with friendship, love, heartbreak, homosexuality, depression, domestic violence, and child abuse. Many young adults have related to the many themes discussed in this book and have sought comfort. They are reminded that they are not alone in the fight against depression. Also, the cast is stellar as it consists of Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Paul Rudd, Ezra Miller, and more.
Loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, this movie does a wonderful job translating the plot into a contemporary setting, making it a classic. The movie revolves around a rich, spoilt Beverly Hills mallrat, aka Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone, who undergoes the vicious cycle of adolescence. The movie journals her self-discovery of her feelings in a thoroughly entertaining and satirical way. Plus, you wouldn’t want to miss Paul Rudd!
Mamma Mia is one of the most heartwarmingly beautiful coming-of-age movies of all time. It features a vivacious Sophie who invites three men she suspects to be her father to her wedding on a Greek Island where she lives with her mother. The movie has funk, flair, song, dance, and a roller coaster of emotions and plot twists that last until the very end. It stars an iconic cast studded with Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, and more.
The sequel was also fantastically made, starring Lily James, Dominic Cooper, and even Cher. We guarantee you that it is a thoroughly worthwhile watch that will make your insides warm and happy.
The Breakfast Club
A movie from the 80s makes this list. This is one of the classic and most talked about movies from that era. It discusses teenage issues such as alienation, angst, and ennui in an extremely earnest and engaging manner. It has a raw vibe, with some scenes being extremely hard-hitting and heavy-handed, bundled with moments of pure ecstasy. “The Breakfast Club” is also known for tackling what’s wrong with child upbringing in a very mild-hearted way. The fact that fans in 2020 still remember Judd Nelson iconically punching the air makes it one of the most relevant coming-of-age movies ever.
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging
Widely famous among British audiences, this movie is another well-made coming-of-age movie. It deals with a teenage girl and her diary where she documents her coming to terms with adolescence. It’s a very offbeat take on teenage years and growing up, making it a very refreshing watch. If you weren’t already intrigued by the name of this movie, it’s also got, Aaron Taylor Johnson!
