Self-help books are written with the explicit intention of helping their readers change or improve some aspects of their personal or professional lives. These books instruct their readers on how to go about solving problems related to grief, pain, broken heart, hopelessness, and so on. About 2000 new titles a year move on and off bookstore shelves and circulate in the market. It seems that self-help books are trending, and the figure shows no sign of stopping. These books are known to cover a lot of topics which include personal growth, maintaining and building relationships, coping with stressful situations, personal issues, self-improvement, etc. The point is, are these books helpful, or are they only hype?

Self-help books provide a lot of good information or advice regarding the topic they cover. They help create positivity within people, resulting in a happier outlook. One of the most important things you can get from reading self-help books is you’re given a better perspective than what you have before. A deeper or wider perspective means a lot of difference to many people. Many self-help books teach the importance of family, friendships, love, and relationships.
Self-help books also resolve conflicts of all kinds. These include conflicts with your family, your relationships, and even within yourself. When people are immature to resolve the rift between them and others these books help the reader to ease the tension amicably. Reading self-help books enriches and supports your learning. There are many forms and sources for self-help books. There are blogs, eBooks, websites, and magazines. These different sources make it easy for the author to reach out to their readers easily. Self-books help the readers go through a life transition that includes pregnancy, parenthood, or divorce. It provides a route map to assist people in the future and make it easier for people to cope and accept things before they happen.
A negative side of self-help books is that sometimes a lot of claims made in these books don’t have proper scientific backing. Just because a psychologist publishes a book doesn’t mean that it’s true and other psychologists support it. What makes the situation worse is they tend to exaggerate their claims by promising astounding results in little time. The way the author presents their self-help tips, make it seem like it’s a general truth. The reality though is that it only worked for them and might not be the same in the case of others. Creating this illusion helps sell the book, but it doesn’t mean that the advice is verified or applies to everyone. If the reader does not understand what is in it that can lead to creating misconceptions. Therefore, over-the-top pricing of the books also forces people to accept what they’re buying is genuine advice when it’s just a glorified manuscript.

In a lot of self-help books, they only tell about the author’s personal life of how they overcame their dark past and went from rags to riches, it’s a good read, but their story and the reader’s story are different with different opportunities. It’s not to say that self-help books are generally useless and a waste of money.
