The 2000’s was a great decade for movies- the audience were starting to become more open-minded towards several themes and genres, and the filmmakers were starting to become brave enough to take a risk and experiment! Don’t quote me on this, but risk and an open mind churn out great creativity! The movies that came out in the 2000’s were a wonderful mix of stories of all genres, groundbreaking narrative styles, exceptional characters, and most memorable dialogues!
I figured I’d start this list off with a happy movie, seeing how the 2000s were basically a Tarantino fest. Up won hearts as soon as it came out! Loveable characters, exceptional animations, music that will stick with you your entire life, a solid plotline about human relationships, and a 10 minute love story that will make you laugh and cry before you realize your feelings are changing- an amalgamation of these wonderful resulted in a movie that is universally loved! If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it now! And if you already have, re-watch it, because you already know that the sense of warmth this movie gives you is like nothing else.
If there ever was a love story more frustratingly beautiful than 500 Days of Summer, this is it! Scripted by Charlie Kayfman, and directed by Michel Gondry, this movie tells the story of two people who are insanely in love with each other. To be able to explain the plot in simple terms would be a herculean task, because the beautiful themes of memory, love, and consciousness, and the emotions that this movie evokes in its viewers- almost as deep as the emotions felt by the characters, are not meant for simple terms. This movie is not a romantic comedy in any way, shape, or form. It is an extremely introspective, and self-aware love letter to love itself.
This Studio Ghibli masterpiece, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, tells the story of a young girl who gets separated from her parents and ends up in a magical world. The story is filled with child-like wonder, fantasy, and whimsy- with impeccably wonderful visuals and a solid storyline to back it up. This touching story about resilience, loyalty, courage, and strength is sure to win you over. Here’s a tip, watch the movie in Japanese with the subtitles on. It holds a certain authenticity that dubbed versions lack.
Any adjective less than “legendary” would not be enough to describe the LOTR movies. This overwhelmingly triumphant end to the epic trilogy ties a perfect bow to the gift that this franchise is to the world. It’s often difficult to bring to life the amazing stories of hugely successful fantasy books, but the Lord Of The Rings movies do not disappoint. With epic battles, breathtaking backdrops, iconic characters, quote-worthy lines, and a beautiful plot about friendship, loyalty, heroism, The Return Of The King will always hold a special place in our hearts. What’s more? The film has eleven Oscars to prove it!
The end of the decade also saw the end of the iconic Harry Potter movie series. It’s safe to say that most 90’s kids grew up with Harry, reading and watching stories about the boy wizard, and his adventures at Hogwarts alongside Ron and Hermione- the golden trio! With an ongoing theme about love, not just romantic, throughout the story, Harry Potter speaks of bravery, acceptance, and loss as well. As the movies get progressively darker in tone, as the Warner Brothers logo at the start of each movie stands testament to it, the final 2 parter is the darkest by far! Away from the protection of Hogwarts and Dumbledore, with no guiding light, the trio must figure out a way to defeat the Dark Lord. A wedding, a rebellion, a battle, and lots of courage make this movie a perfect way to end the story of our beloved Harry.
The 2000's was a great decade for Tarantino movie buffs! I’d have loved it too if I was old enough to watch his movies then! The title of the movie is misspelled on purpose, a true testament to the theme of defiance it carries. Inglourious Basterds was Tarantino at his absolute best- a perfect concoction of great dialogue, his trademark violence, and a story with depth and real heart. If you’re new to the Tarantino planet, start off with this movie.
While we’re still on the Tarantino train, check out his exceptional movie Kill Bill: Volume One. In this story about a killer bride, Tarantino teams up with his Pulp Fiction star, Uma Thurman, to give us an action-packed gore-fest filled with a cast of exceptional actors, highly quotable lines, and homages. If, after having watched this, you can’t get enough of it, there’s another volume that is equally iconic!
Set apart time worth double the duration of this movie, because you will watch it a second time! This Jake Gyllenhaal starrer is a groundbreaking work of scientific fiction. The movie starts with a plane crash, and delves much deeper into the themes of alternate realities, parallel universes, time travel, and altered realities. Dark, eerie, and mysterious, with an excellent soundtrack to seal the deal, this movie will make sure you remember it forever. This cult classic is a must watch for every movie buff. Keep an eye out for a young Seth Rogen!
And if you don't have the time to invest into watching an entire movie, Rizzle Series is perfect for you! Much like the 2000's movies, these bite-sized short series are diverse in genres, narratives, and stories. Watch amazing stories and concepts brought to life on Rizzle!
