Hollywood has no shortage of badass female characters who take up legendary roles of fighting aliens, wizards, kings, and take down patriarchy while at the same time inspiring all young girls around the world that they are equally capable of taking down the bad guys. Even though the problem of equal gender pay still exists widely in Hollywood, the number of amazing strong female characters keeps increasing making it incredibly difficult to pick just five in our list today. So, here are five badass female characters that changed the idea of female characters on TV:
For decades, male characters dominated legal drama TV series until Olivia Benson came along. One of the most loved TV characters of all time, detective Olivia Benson is played by Mariska Hargitay in the famous TV series Law & Order: SVU. Olivia Benson is an iconic character, so iconic that pop star Taylor Swift named her cat Olivia Benson after her. Olivia's childhood was a nightmare, being the daughter of a rape victim and her alcoholic mother's constant abuse. She joined the SVU "Special Victims Unit" because of her childhood trauma and her compassion and sensitivity towards victims of sexual assault make her a superhero with a badge. Olivia Benson as a character is looked up to by many, both men and women. More TV series should create such strong and powerful characters.
Do you remember that iconic scene where Katiness shoots the apple through a roasted pig's mouth towards the Gamemakers. It was the moment we all realized that she is a badass and that she is going to win the Hunger Games, which indeed she did. Katniss Everdeen is played by the Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence. Katniss has been the breadwinner of the family- taking care of her mom and her sister with the hunting skills she learned from her father. From the moment she volunteers for her sister to the moment when she saves Peeta Mellark we see the full potential of Katiness Everdeen and the symbol she stands for. In most movies we see men saving the damsel in distress but with her strength and determination, Katiness Everdeen forever stands as a symbol of rebellion against the oppressors.
The sole lady of the original Avengers and the most badass of them all Natasha Romanoff or Black Widow is a Russian spy. Scarlett Johansson has reprised the role in 11 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe(MCU). Even though she does not have god-like power, insane strength, immensely technologically gifted, she is the best at hand on hand combat. If the Avengers are stripped of their powers nobody can defeat Black Widow with her combat skills, espionage, and tracking people. Apart from her skills, she keeps the team together which we have seen in many movies and especially in "Endgame" in the aftermath of "Infinity War."
The ultimate trio of the wizarding world would have been impossible without the clever Hermione Granger. Emma Watson became a household name among Potterheads reprising the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series. She is a "know-it-all" badass and a role model who is excellent in academics and knows all the dangerous spells and that makes her one of the most badass wizards ever. Even though she is bullied in school for being a Muggle-born, she is kind, empathetic, and extremely intelligent. Without her razor sharp brain, her timeliness, and her insane skills, Harry and Ron would have never completed the quest to destroy the Horcruxes and to later defeat You-Know-Who.
Brienne of Tarth is the first woman of the Seven Kingdoms to become a knight and nobody deserves this title more than her. Her character arc in the Game of Thrones series is absolutely amazing. In the whole of Seven Kingdom when no man kept their word, Brienne of Tarth kept her's and protected Catelyn Stark's daughters till the end as she promised. She broke stereotypes and followed her passion to become a knight despite all the hardships and scorn that were thrown at her. "All my life men like you have sneered at me. And all my life I've been knocking men like you into the dust." -Brienne to Jaime Lannister
