You are browsing through Instagram, smiling, liking some posts and envying your friends, when you see an advertisement for healthy food from Cure.Fit. You think to yourself, “I should eat more healthy food” and you know you should, but why can't you? Your mom has been taunting you about eating more healthy food since you were a kid, and yet you would rather spend thousands of rupees every month on McDonalds, KFC, Dominos than food that you know is better for your health and your body.
You have read about how much of a vital role your diet plays in every single aspect of your life. From maintaining a healthy weight to even your mental health. And let's be honest, if non-veg wasn't so tasty, most of us would give up on it because we do care about how animals are treated. So why can't we? What is this compulsive force that comes from within us, that seems to be stronger than any other force of nature. Why can't we pick healthy food over tasty food?
Unfortunately for us, this goes back to millions of years ago when our prehistoric ancestors had very scarce access to food. Procuring food was a very difficult task at that time, it was not as simple as clicking a button on a glass brick in your hand (your phone) or to just walk into a store and pick whatever you wanted, pay money and walk out. They had to hunt and gather, and this scarcity resulted in a stronger desire for sugar, primarily, because that is essentially what our body requires to function (glucose).
And so, millions of years later, when we do not commonly have such scarcity of food, our brains still get a very enjoyable feeling when we consume things like sugar, and the more concentrated the item, the more enjoyable it feels. The joy we experience tricks our brain into thinking this is good for us, even though it really isn't. In fact, it's really really bad. Basically, it taps into the same part of your brain that drugs hook on to and get you addicted. Which is why it's so difficult to stop eating junk food, once you get used to it.
So what do you do? Well, first of all, you educate yourself. You learn about this mechanism of your brain, which you know now. Next, you make a more conscious decision the next time you are bored and want to hangout with your friends or whn you are just hungry for a quick snack. It's okay to consume junk food once in a while, but to make it your staple diet can only lead to disastrous results for your wellbeing and long term health.
And the great news is, we are living in a time when there are a lot of healthy AND tasty options available. While scientists and entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley are experimenting with creating indistinguishable artificial meat out of plants, we also have more and more vegan restaurants popping up every other day providing an interesting variety of healthy vegan food options.
